This is mainly a post to remind me to post. Of course, we’re busy with election season at The Evening News. And, it’s also baseball season, which means it’s, well, work and baseball for me.

But, let this be a lesson to me to updated this blog. Meanwhile, read your local paper!

I took a rare trip to the cineplex Monday to check out ‘Up in the Air,’ staring George Clooney, Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick.

The reviews have been great, and, in my opinion, spot on. The film is funny with serious undertones and a universal message of finding happiness.

It’s also expertly paced and acted. Look for Golden Globes and Oscars abound.

Check it out if you get a chance.

In probably my only sports homer tendency, I’m an IU basketball fan. The team is tougher and has more talent this year, but watching the offense sputter against Michigan last night, and some teams before, it illustrates how much they miss superfrosh Maurice Creek. With Creek out, no one on the team can consistently make deep shots (or in Jeremiah Rivers’ case, a 10-foot shot), and the defense can clutter the middle.

The Evening News is working on a story or stories (we’re not quite sure yet) about the state of the Clark-Floyd Counties Convention & Tourism Bureau. They should run in The Tribune as well. Look for them this weekend, as well as an editorial in The Evening News on Sunday.

Well, we survived the holidays at the paper, and then now this … a whole two inches of snow.

It’s funny the disparate reactions to school cancelations. After typing in the daily jail book-ins this morning, I surfed on over to clarkcountychatter.com to see what folks were saying about the snow. There were a few gripes about Southern Indiana school systems calling off classes today.

On the other side of the river, parents were griping to WLKY that Jefferson County Public Schools did not do the same and made kids get their learn on today.

Thinking from a kids’ perspective, I’d be chapped if I was out of school today. For starters, you have to make the day up. And, there’s barely enough snow to sled and it’s friggin’ cold.

All this cold weather has me thinking ahead a few weeks to pitchers and catchers reporting to Florida and Arizona for spring training; and firing up my DirecTV MLB Extra Innings package six weeks after that.

The Hall of Fame class of one was announced Wednesday. Congrats to Andre Dawson, although I wouldn’t have voted for him. I would have voted for Tim Raines, for starters. Do you baseball fans realize he reached base more than the legendary Tony Gwynn? True.

My New Year’s resolution is to make this bloggin’ more of a habit. Talk to you soon.

His previous two convictions have been overturned.

Another man, Charles Boney, has been convicted of the murders and is in jail for the rest of his life.

This third trial will cost, at least, hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars.

Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson said this week the more time that passes, the harder it is to convict someone of a crime.

Is there really anything left to prove?

Sometimes I’ll step out of the newsroom at The Evening News a bit and just talk about … well, whatever.

I was driving home from the Kentuckinatti airport last night along Interstate 71 and saw a familiar sign — the ‘memorial’ to the May 14, 1988, Carrollton, Ky., bus crash, as it’s known.

It remains the deadliest bush crash in U.S. history. It left 27 people dead and more than 30 injured.

What I’ve always found weird is the nature of the memorial. It’s a green and white metal road sign — similar to the one that lets drivers know they are entering Carroll County, or that there are X amount of miles to the next city.
It’s nondescript, cold and unfeeling, which doesn’t seem to fit the nature of the tragedy, since so many emotions were raised — not only by those who lost family and friends, but by anti-drunken driving groups angry at Larry Mahoney, the wrong-way driver who hit the bus in his pickup truck.

I think memorializing the crash is a good thing — and there is a more permanent memorial at North Hardin Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Radcliff.

To me, the sign just looks out of place when dressed up as a standard road sign.
